When I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":234.4,"endTime":242.4,"body":"was a wee little kid, my father got me a cheap, probably Sears, you know, Tasco, whatever, department"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":242.4,"endTime":245.4,"body":"store telescope. And I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":245.4,"endTime":252.4,"body":"lived in the country and I had space to set it up sort of in a clearing in our yard. And"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":252.4,"endTime":253.4,"body":"there"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":253.4,"endTime":257.4,"body":"were no lights around to speak of. And there"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":257.4,"endTime":260.4,"body":"were, you know, beautiful skies. So I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":260.4,"endTime":269.4,"body":"looked through this little cheap-ass telescope and saw, you know, I tell people that I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":269.4,"endTime":276.4,"body":"didn't see the rings of Saturn, but I could tell that Saturn was more than just a round"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":276.4,"endTime":278.4,"body":"blob. You know,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":278.4,"endTime":281.4,"body":"it really was a cheap-ass telescope. That's cool."},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":281.4,"endTime":282.4,"body":"They usually"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":282.4,"endTime":285.4,"body":"are when you first start out. Yeah, right."},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":285.4,"endTime":286.4,"body":"You know,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":286.4,"endTime":290.4,"body":"my dad didn't know if this was something I was going to be interested in or, you know, was I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":290.4,"endTime":295.4,"body":"going to destroy a, you know, a thousand dollar telescope, you know, or whatever. So, you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":295.4,"endTime":296.4,"body":"know, I understand. I respect"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":296.4,"endTime":299.4,"body":"his decision. The funny"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":299.4,"endTime":305.4,"body":"thing is, I've always been interested in science and space, but the telescope itself just sort"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":305.4,"endTime":310.4,"body":"of, it wasn't good enough to keep my attention once I understood its limitations. And honestly,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":310.4,"endTime":314.4,"body":"it became a prop. I'm trying"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":314.4,"endTime":320.4,"body":"to debate how much information to give you here. But so"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":320.4,"endTime":330.68,"body":"the, my life was complicated as a kid. I had"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":330.68,"endTime":333.68,"body":"a father and a stepfather. I call"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":333.68,"endTime":334.68,"body":"them both dad. It was"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":334.68,"endTime":337.68,"body":"the stepfather that gave me my telescope. But my"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":337.68,"endTime":340.68,"body":"first father was a police officer. And so"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":340.68,"endTime":343.68,"body":"I had like toy guns. You know,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":343.68,"endTime":345.68,"body":"you're the child of a cop. You have"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":345.68,"endTime":347.68,"body":"toy guns. And that"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":347.68,"endTime":352.68,"body":"telescope became like the bazooka of my toy gun collection. That's awesome."},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":352.68,"endTime":353.68,"body":"Because when"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":353.68,"endTime":359.68,"body":"you removed it from the tripod and you had the little, you know, the plastic mount thing"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":359.68,"endTime":363.68,"body":"that would go back onto the tripod, you could like bolt something to that and it became"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":363.68,"endTime":364.68,"body":"a handle. And then"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":364.68,"endTime":368.68,"body":"you had all these little extended pieces and stuff you get out onto it. And like,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":368.68,"endTime":369.68,"body":"it was just perfect. Like set"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":369.68,"endTime":370.68,"body":"on your shoulder. Pretend it"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":370.68,"endTime":372.68,"body":"was like a rocket launcher or whatever. So it"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":372.68,"endTime":377.68,"body":"actually started in a couple of home movies when I was a teenager. And it"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":377.68,"endTime":380.68,"body":"was literally a prop. But that's"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":380.68,"endTime":383.68,"body":"fantastic. But and"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":383.68,"endTime":386.68,"body":"I'm not going to drag this on too much longer. But there"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":386.68,"endTime":389.68,"body":"was one thing about this telescope that I thought was unique. It had"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":389.68,"endTime":392.68,"body":"a Barlow that came with it. And the"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":392.68,"endTime":399.68,"body":"Barlow had a very small little plastic sleeve at the end of it. That you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":399.68,"endTime":406.68,"body":"could use to just slide it out like maybe a half an inch to like fine tune the magnification or"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":406.68,"endTime":409.68,"body":"the focus or whatever. And that"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":409.68,"endTime":412.68,"body":"plastic sleeve was clear. And so"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":412.68,"endTime":416.68,"body":"the weird thing about this was they designed it to be able to do that as a Barlow. But then"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":416.68,"endTime":421.68,"body":"if you used this plastic sleeve and like put it down on a piece of paper, as long as you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":421.68,"endTime":426.68,"body":"had light shining through that little plastic sleeve, it became like a little miniature microscope. Oh"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":426.68,"endTime":427.68,"body":"cool."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":427.68,"endTime":428.68,"body":"So I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":428.68,"endTime":433.68,"body":"got intrigued by the optics of how this worked. And it"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":433.68,"endTime":435.68,"body":"stuck in the back of my head. And when"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":435.68,"endTime":441.68,"body":"I went off to school, I actually studied micro electronic engineering, which is building microchips basically."},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":441.68,"endTime":442.68,"body":"But a"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":442.68,"endTime":448.68,"body":"lot of that is, you know, staring through microscopes at the actual chips and looking for defects on"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":448.68,"endTime":452.68,"body":"sub micron, you know, scales and things like this. So the"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":452.68,"endTime":455.68,"body":"optics was never too far from my brain. And when"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":455.68,"endTime":457.68,"body":"I became kind of a make your own Barlow. I got"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":457.68,"endTime":463.68,"body":"interested in photography, specifically wildlife photography and birds of prey. So eagles"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":463.68,"endTime":465.68,"body":"and hawks and things like that. So I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":465.68,"endTime":471.68,"body":"amassed quite a collection of big glass for my camera, my cameras. And mind"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":471.68,"endTime":474.68,"body":"you, this is back in like the 90s. So I'm"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":474.68,"endTime":481.68,"body":"shooting slide film, you know, basically trying to get published, which I did get some published pictures."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":481.68,"endTime":482.68,"body":"But at"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":482.68,"endTime":485.68,"body":"one point, I was like, I'm going to do this. But at"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":485.68,"endTime":490.68,"body":"one point I said, oh, hey, I have this vague memory of, you know, looking up at the skies as a"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":490.68,"endTime":491.68,"body":"kid. At this"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":491.68,"endTime":492.68,"body":"point, I lived in the city. There wasn't"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":492.68,"endTime":494.68,"body":"a lot of skies to look at. But Comet"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":494.68,"endTime":497.68,"body":"Yakutaki was in town. And so"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":497.68,"endTime":503.68,"body":"I threw my camera onto a tripod and I started taking pictures of the comet. And of"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":503.68,"endTime":507.68,"body":"course, with slide film, you have to wait to see what the results are. Yeah. Yeah."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":507.68,"endTime":508.68,"body":"There's"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":508.68,"endTime":509.68,"body":"no"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":509.68,"endTime":510.68,"body":"integration, right? It's, you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":510.68,"endTime":512.68,"body":"know, if you take a 30 second picture, that's what you got, etc. Anyway, it"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":512.68,"endTime":513.68,"body":"was horrible. It's absolutely"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":513.68,"endTime":514.68,"body":"horrible. And I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":515.68,"endTime":519.48,"body":"shelved the whole thing after a while. My wife"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":519.48,"endTime":525.68,"body":"comes along a few years ago and says, hey, you were interested in astronomy as a kid. I'm"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":525.68,"endTime":526.68,"body":"going"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":526.68,"endTime":533.68,"body":"to get you this Christmas present for SLOOH.com, S-L-O-O-H, which is still in existence. It"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":533.68,"endTime":534.68,"body":"was"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":534.68,"endTime":539.68,"body":"one of, if not the first sort of remote operated telescopes that you could subscribe to. Oh,"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":539.68,"endTime":540.68,"body":"super"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":540.68,"endTime":541.68,"body":"cool. So, you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":541.68,"endTime":545.68,"body":"know, you got like, I don't know, 10 hours a month or whatever. It was"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":545.68,"endTime":550.68,"body":"that you could aim their telescopes at a target and it would capture images and you would"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":550.68,"endTime":551.68,"body":"get the data. And on"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":551.68,"endTime":556.68,"body":"the one hand, it was really cool because these telescopes are on like the Canary Islands and Chile"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":556.68,"endTime":560.68,"body":"and all these sort of, you know, remote places that we're used to these days. But this"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":560.68,"endTime":563.68,"body":"was sort of brand new at the time. And, you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":563.68,"endTime":565.68,"body":"know, you figure out- And 10"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":565.68,"endTime":567.68,"body":"hours is a lot of time. Yeah. Yeah."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":567.68,"endTime":568.68,"body":"And,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":568.68,"endTime":569.68,"body":"you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":569.68,"endTime":570.68,"body":"know, it would reset. So it"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":570.68,"endTime":571.68,"body":"wasn't just like, here's 10 hours. It was,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":571.68,"endTime":572.68,"body":"here's 10 hours in January. Here's 10"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":572.68,"endTime":573.68,"body":"hours in February. Here's 10"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":573.68,"endTime":574.68,"body":"hours in March. And I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":574.68,"endTime":579.68,"body":"wasn't quite sophisticated enough to take advantage of what, you know, what that meant in"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":579.68,"endTime":585.68,"body":"terms of target selection at that time, but I understood what it represented. And so"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":585.68,"endTime":591.68,"body":"no matter what I tried to make use of my 10 hours, even it was just like, aim at the"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":591.68,"endTime":594.68,"body":"moon, you know, or whatever, just do something. And that's"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":594.68,"endTime":595.68,"body":"when I started- Let me,"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":595.68,"endTime":597.68,"body":"I'm going to interject real quick. That part"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":597.68,"endTime":604.68,"body":"of astronomy is one of the biggest aspects of astronomy is target selection. You have"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":604.68,"endTime":605.68,"body":"to look at the weather. You have"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":605.68,"endTime":610.68,"body":"to look at the location, the light pollution, the target, where it's going to be in"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":610.68,"endTime":612.68,"body":"the sky, how much time you're going to get with it. Because you"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":612.68,"endTime":616.68,"body":"might have 10 hours to shoot, but that target might only be up for five hours. Yeah."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":616.68,"endTime":617.68,"body":"And"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":617.68,"endTime":618.68,"body":"at"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":618.68,"endTime":623.68,"body":"the same time, I don't want to make it sound like, you know, I would"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":623.68,"endTime":626.68,"body":"just pick something basically at that time. I'd be,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":626.68,"endTime":630.68,"body":"you know, they had a rudimentary version of what would sort of like, if you went to Telescopius today,"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":630.68,"endTime":633.68,"body":"you could, you know, kind of put some parameters in. It would"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":633.68,"endTime":635.68,"body":"give you a list of potential targets. They had"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":635.68,"endTime":637.68,"body":"something similar to that. I didn't"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":637.68,"endTime":638.68,"body":"really know what I was doing. So I"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":638.68,"endTime":642.68,"body":"just like, you know, well, that looks like it might be fun to take a picture of Kind of"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":642.68,"endTime":643.68,"body":"thing. But, you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":643.68,"endTime":648.68,"body":"know, I am more sophisticated now. There's obviously"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":648.68,"endTime":654.68,"body":"a lot more sophisticated software than there was 20-ish years ago. More than"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":654.68,"endTime":655.68,"body":"that, actually. But at"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":655.68,"endTime":662.68,"body":"the same time, you don't have to be, you know, you could just literally like look at the"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":662.68,"endTime":665.68,"body":"sky and say, that looks interesting. I'll see"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":665.68,"endTime":668.68,"body":"what happens if I take pictures of it. And, you"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":668.68,"endTime":673.68,"body":"know, if you happen to be taking pictures and the full moon comes up, maybe next time"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":673.68,"endTime":677.68,"body":"you'll make a note and say like, oh, well, you know, that turned out badly because the"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":677.68,"endTime":678.68,"body":"moon. And maybe"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":678.68,"endTime":680.68,"body":"you'll choose differently next time. Or maybe"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":680.68,"endTime":683.68,"body":"you lucked out and the moon wasn't a factor. I bought it. Um, but"},{"speaker":"Eric Loyd","startTime":1039.68,"endTime":1044.68,"body":"that is the progression of me becoming an astrophotographer. So I bought all this expensive equipment. I have lights, cameras, microphone,"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1078.02,"endTime":1082.02,"body":"and then I got another job and"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1082.02,"endTime":1089.02,"body":"COVID kind of ended and kind of waned to the side. I didn't really"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1089.02,"endTime":1093.02,"body":"have any interest, but I still loved the stars."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1093.02,"endTime":1098.02,"body":"And then. The big moment happened when we had the, uh, the"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1098.02,"endTime":1099.02,"body":"total solar"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1099.02,"endTime":1104.02,"body":"eclipse. And I was like, oh my gosh, I've got to take a"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1104.02,"endTime":1107.02,"body":"picture of that. I've never seen one before. And I went out and tried to"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1107.02,"endTime":1109.02,"body":"do the best internet search"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1109.02,"endTime":1114.02,"body":"I could find as a professional computer tech. That's something I would hope I was good at, but I"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1114.02,"endTime":1115.02,"body":"was"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1115.02,"endTime":1118.02,"body":"terrible at it. And some people recommended this and some people recommended that I ended"},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1118.02,"endTime":1123.02,"body":"up getting an NK 105, which is like a bird watching telescope. It's probably."},{"speaker":"Eric Wright","startTime":1123.02,"endTime":1127.02,"body":"Okay. Ish for the moon. I just had a regular tripod. You learn information from the group and your knowledge grows. And it's kind of that loop.
